Adam MacDougall Interview: The Black Crowes Electric Spanking of Warpaint Babies

                                             Adam MacDougall Interview
The Black Crowes Electric Spanking of Warpaint Babies
                                                   By James Calemine
                                             "Walk believer walk,
                                             Your work ain't never done."
                                                        -The Black Crowes

The Black Crowes rank as one of the finest rock and roll bands recording and touring these days. The Black Crowes’ musical path led them through glorious peaks and dark valleys during their 20-year career. The band’s ruthless determination to move onward through the most savage and strange changes earned them a reputation as a cantankerous and powerful band in a shallow and fickle music business.

Adam MacDougall joined the Crowes last year. Born in New York City, MacDougall began playing music at an early age. A resident of Los Angeles since 1998, MacDougall met Chris Robinson in Laurel Canyon a couple of years ago, which eventually led to him joining the band. Jonathan Wilson and Robinson hosted Wednesday night jam sessions at Wilson’s Laurel Canyon home where MacDougall began sitting in. Robinson later asked MacDougall to play on Gary Louris’ Vagabonds CD that Robinson produced. Jonathan Wilson—a genius in his own right—called MacDougall “a prodigy”.

you can lead a horse to water...

I've seen these guys probably close to 50 times over the last 23 years, and recently just saw the band the last two nights in Chicago. First night in the balcony. Second night seven rows back on Rich's side. I'll never make the mistake of seeing these guys anywhere but up front again.

GREAT two shows by the way

Neal Casal's Tumblr page
Apart from some really great guitar playing, Neal is also an impressive Photog. There's some really great pictures (maybe around 300 or so) on his page. Check out his link above and show him some brotherly/sisterly love: Neal on Facebook

Chris shares a moment with one of Jerry's geetars, Wolf

Barefoot

December 13, 2012
The band, last night, pulled one of Chris' songs from the 2004-shelf, dusted it off and played it. I wonder how long the band needed to rehearse a song that Chris hasn't played live for eight years. Looking forward to hearing how the rest of the band's take is on the sound.

Enjoy this old one. Has a few Paul Stacey sightings on it:

Barefoot by the Cherry Tree

Staring out of a window
Into a gray sky scene
Alone stands a widow
With her skin porcelain
To a black limosine
She exits....

Chris Robinson Interview

December 10, 2012
by Tom Lanham (special for the San Francisco Examiner)

The band name itself is an in-joke because the Chris Robinson Brotherhood features keyboardist Adam MacDougall, bassist Mark Dutton, drummer George Sluppick, guitarist Neal Casal and, of course, Chris Robinson on guitar and vocals — but not his brother and longtime Black Crowes bandmate, Rich Robinson. But in two albums the group has forged its own extended-jam path, exemplified by the surreal Alan Forbes cover illustration on the new record, “The Magic Door.” “I told him I wanted him to do Albrecht Durer’s celestial map of the northern sky, but with our psychedelic icons and mythology intermingled, like when our space gnome Captain Nebula opens the door to the other side,” Robinson says of his concept.

Who needs drugs when you have Alan Forbes designing your logo and cover art?
Hey, times are tough in America!

Chris Robinson Brotherhood – Could Be What Magic Sounds Like

Before Chris Robinson Botherhood there was The Black Crowes; before that there was New Earth Mud; before that, there was The Black Crowes; and before that, Mr. Crowe’s Garden…….
Each time The Black Crowes take a break, Chris Robinson gets busy.

This guy's playing absolutely blows my skull. I'm pretty sure that if I walked into a Willy-Wonka factory today and Adam was providing the background music for it, I'd be somewhere near nirvana.

Cleveland Review

by Dave Swanson

Jerry Garcia might be long gone, but his children are always looking for a new dwelling. Enter Chris Robinson, once (and future?) lead singer for the Black Crowes, one of the purest rock and roll bands to emerge in the last 20-odd years. Their take on ‘Sticky Fingers’-era Stones and Gram Parsons’ ghost was always a thing of beauty.

With the Crowes on another indefinite hiatus (“Best not to wake the bear while it’s hibernating,’” Robinson recently told Uncut), Chris is sailing head-on into his own solo trip.

Boston November 8, 2012 Review

Review by Adam Icculus

Last night The Chris Robinson Brotherhood rolled into town for a sold out show at Boston’s Paradise Rock Club. The venue was jam packed and the vibe was on point for a southern rock throw down.

Review by Ike Riddick

Being an avid Black Crowes and Chris Robinson fan, conceptualizing CRB (Chris Robinson Brotherhood) jamming in the intimacy of the Lincoln Theater equated to perhaps one of the most anticipated shows I have awaited in quite some time. Shortly after firing up a bouquet of incense emerging from atop an owl’s head figurine, the band took their rightful places on stage and a magical musical journey commenced.

Charlotte November 2, 2012 Review

 Review by Jeff Hahne
(h/t Livin' from blackcrowes.net)

Chris Robinson grooved and sang his way through song after song during the Chris Robinson Brotherhood's Nov. 2, 2012, concert at the Neighborhood Theatre. While he occasionally grinned at his bandmates during lengthy jams, he reserved his biggest smiles of the night for his biggest fan. Standing just off the stage was his daughter, Cheyenne, who will turn 3 next month. Wearing big pink headphones and a black shirt emblazoned with a glittery "I Love Rock and Roll" across the front, Cheyenne watched, danced and stared as her father got the packed NoDa venue dancing and singing along.

Neal Casal interview...

by David Von Bader

Neal Casal is a man of many hats. A prolific and fully realized recording artist in his own right, Casal has released a steady flow of his own albums since the early '90s, worked with artists like Tift Merritt and Willie Nelson, and has released a book of his photography, Ryan Adams and the Cardinals: A View of Other Windows, documenting the time he spent in his most recognizable role as band mate to the alternative country superhero.

The New Jersey born Casal recently found himself playing the role of sideman once again, this time as a member of the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, a band that displays both Casal and the former Black Crowes frontman's neo-hippie sonic tendencies in a way that is neither filtered nor abbreviated.

New Times caught up with Casal during a stop in New Orleans to discuss his life as a sideman, his photography, and losing pool to Willie Nelson.
